Ærø is an island in the Danish Baltic Sea and is part of the Region of Southern Denmark.
Since January 1, 2006, the entire island has been organized as a single municipality, Ærø Kommune. Before that, Ærø was divided into two municipalities: Ærøskøbing Kommune in the west and Marstal Kommune in the east. This merger was part of a broader public sector reform, with the law taking effect on June 26, 2005. Unlike other municipalities, which merged in 2007, Ærø was allowed to unify a year earlier because a local referendum had already shown majority support for the change.
In a 2010 survey by the Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad, Ærø was voted Denmark’s third most beautiful island, following Fur and Læsø.
