The national flag of Algeria ( Arabic: علم الجزائر‎, Berber: Akenyal en Dzayer) was adopted on 3 July 1962. A similar version was used by the Algerian government in exile from 1958 to 1962.

Design[]

The flag consists of two halves, one green and the other white, along with a red Star and Crescent layered on top.

Symbolism[]

The flag allegedly aims to represent the cultural heritage of Algeria, although the meaning is speculated. Here are some examples of different interpretations from a variety of people.

White represents purity and green represents Islam.

Pierre Lux-Wurm[]

White and green remind of the ancient banners of Islam from the time of Prophet Muhammadﷺ, while the Star and Crescent means light.

Khaled Merzouk[]

Green represents Earth annd agriculture, the white for peace, and the Star and Crescent is a symbol of Islam. Each point of the star represent a pillar of Islam.
