The National Flag of the Republic of Angola was first adopted in 1975, being put in place after the independence from Portugal.
Design[]
The flag is largely inspired by the flag of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) which emerged as the victor during the country's war of independence and its civil war. The flag is split horizontally into an upper red half and a lower black half with an emblem featuring a yellow half gear wheel crossed by a machete and crowned with a five-pointed star, echoing the hammer and sickle and alluding to its communist roots. (See Soviet union flag).
Symbolism[]
The red portion signifies Angola's past struggles for independence against its Portuguese colonial master at the cost of many of its own people's lives. It was also meant to symbolise revolution, but by 1992, the reference was changed to the defense of country. The black portion embodies the African continent. The Machete and Gear Emblem in gold stand for industrial workers and production and the machete represents peasantry, agricultural production as well as the armed struggle. Finally, golden star symbolises international solidarity and progress. The over emphasis of the gold colour is meant to signify the country's wealth.
