Armenia is a country in the Caucasus region of south-eastern Europe.

Design[]

The flag of Armenia is a horizontal tricolor of red, blue, and orange.

Symbolism[]

The red stands for the blood of the 1.5 million Armenians killed in the Armenian Genocide, the blue is for the Armenian pure sky, and the orange represents the country's courage. The official definition of the colors is stated in the constitution of Armenia:

”The red emblematizes the Armenian Highland, the Armenian people's continued struggle for survival, maintenance of the Christian faith, Armenia's independence and freedom. The blue emblematizes the will of the people of Armenia to live beneath peaceful skies. The orange emblematizes the creative talent and hard-working nature of the people of Armenia.”

History[]

The original flag came from the First Republic of Armenia, which lasted from 1918-1922, but it had a ratio of 2:3. When Armenia became a Soviet republic, the flag was just the flag of the Soviet Union, but they put a blue stripe in the middle of the flag.
