The flag was created and raised as a combat banner of the Revolutionary Army of the North in 1859, led by Pedro León Gallo Goyenechea during the revolution that took place that year, with famous Zuavos and Constituent battles, among others. The colors used would be a symbol of the liberalism and secularism that Gallo preached. Legends say that the yellow star would come from the passage of Comet Donati in 1858, which would have accompanied the entire constituent effort of those years.
The flag was officially adopted through Resolution 79 of the Regional Council of the Atacama Region, which approved the Atacama Regional Regulation No. 2 on September 28, 1995, and which was published in the Official Gazette on February 1, 1996.1 In Article 4 it was determined that "the flag of the Atacama Region has a single blue field and has a golden star in its center."
