Vexillology Wiki

The flag of Benin consists of two horizontal bands of yellow and red and one vertical band of green. The flag was adopted in 1959 and used until 1975, when a coup d'etat put into power a new Marxist-Leninist government that replaced the flag. In 1990, the People's Republic of Benin collapsed due to the weakening of the Soviet Union and the 1959 flag was restored, which is the flag that is used in Benin to this day.

Meaning[]

The green in the flag represents the hope of a new democracy, the red represents the courage of the ancestors, and the yellow represents the treasures of the nation.
