Bergen is a municipality in the province of Limburg, Netherlands.
Description[]
The flag of Bergen is a blue background with a wavy gold stripe in the middle and seven white arrows bound together with a red band.
Symbolism[]
The design is based on the corresponding municipal coat of arms, which was adopted in 2016. The arrows have two meanings. They symbolize the seven centers within the municipality and also form an important element in the coat of arms of the former manor of Well (now one of the residential areas within Bergen). Originally, the arrows represented the ship's bank of Well, of which Bergen was a part for quite some time. The colors white, yellow, and blue are also derived from the old coat of arms of Well. The yellow wavy stripe refers to the Meuse river, which flows through the municipality. The red band indicates the connection between the different centers.
Former Flag[]
The former flag of Bergen consisted of five horizontal stripes of yellow, blue, red, yellow, and blue. It was adopted on 14 October 1969.
The stripes of the flag were derived from the shields and escutcheons depicted on the former coat of arms. The main colors were yellow and blue, while the escutcheons were mainly red. In order to represent the three lordships in a fair way on the flag, the choice was made for five horizontal stripes with colors yellow, blue, red, yellow, and blue.
