The flag of Bonaire consists of the colors yellow, black, red, white and blue. The size and placement of the colors and symbols are determined according to mathematical proportions.

The Bonaire flag has been in use since December 15, 1981. The island ordinance to determine the flag of Bonaire was drawn up on December 11, 1981. The American flag expert Whitney Smith indicated the guidelines during the design of the Bonaire flag. A competition was held among the population for its design. Due to the lack of a convincing winning design in the submissions, the flag became a compilation of various submissions and was created by the then chairman of the flag committee Mr Frans Booi.

Design[]

The flag has three stripes in yellow, white and blue that run from bottom left to top right: symbol of the upward trend in the growth and development of Bonaire. The yellow stripe refers to the sun and to the yellow flowers of Bonaire's native vegetation, especially the kibrahacha, which blooms once a year. The white strip represents peace, freedom and purity. The blue stripe refers to the sky and the sea, which connects Bonaire to the world and plays an important role in our economy. The red star represents the blood that the Bonairians have shed to free themselves from enemies and symbolizes our survival strength. The points of the star refer to the six traditional residential areas on the island: Rincon, Nort di Saliña, Antriol, Nikiboko, Tera Kora and Playa. The black compass ring refers to the fame of the Bonairians as good sailors and fishermen and stands for course stability and our economic, friendly and cultural relations in all directions.
