Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea, situated east of mainland Denmark, south of Sweden, northeast of Germany, and north of Poland.
Due to its strategic location, Bornholm has been contested for centuries. While it has mostly been under Danish rule, it has also been controlled by Sweden and Lübeck at different times. One of the island’s most significant landmarks is the ruins of Hammershus, located on its northwestern tip. This medieval fortress, the largest in Northern Europe, highlights the island’s historical importance.
Bornholm, along with the nearby Ertholmene islands, is the only remaining Danish territory in Skåneland east of the Øresund. Although Denmark ceded the region to Sweden in 1658, Bornholm was reclaimed in 1660 following a local uprising.
