Vexillology Wiki

The flag of Botswana features two large horizontal bands of light blue at the top and bottom, a central black band, and two thin white bands in between the blue and black bands. There is also a variant flag of Botswana used as the presidential standard that features the coat of arms of Botswana on a light blue background. The flag of Botswana was adopted and first flown on the day of independence (September 30th, 1966).

Meaning[]

The light blue in the flag represents rain or water, a very precious resource in Botswana. The black band and white bands have a few meanings. They symbolize harmony and cooperation between the many peoples of Botswana. They also represent the colors of the zebra, Botswana's national animal.
