The British Antarctic Territory (BAT) is the United Kingdom's claim to Antarctica. Its flag is a white field with the Union Jack in the canton, and the territory's coat of arms in the fly.
The coat of arms was granted in 1952 to the Falkland Island Dependencies, which comprised the UK's Antarctic claims and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It was readopted for the newly formed BAT in 1963, adding a helm, mantling and a crest. The shield consists of a white field with blue waves, charged with a golden torch on a red pile. The supporters are a lion and an Emperor penguin; the crest is the RRS Discovery research ship. The motto is "Research and Discovery".
