The British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. They comprise the eastern part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, which also includes the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands of Puerto Rico. The territory's flag is a Blue Ensign with its coat of arms in the fly.
The coat of arms depicts Saint Ursula holding an oil lamp, with eleven more lamps around her. It references the name originally given to the islands by Christopher Columbus in 1493, "Santa Úrsula y las Once Mil Vírgenes" (Saint Ursula and the 11,000 Virgins). The motto below the shield is "Vigilate", meaning "be vigilant".
