The flag of Burlington, Vermont, are 5 zigzag stripes of blue, white, and green. It was adopted in November 27, 2017.
Symbolism[]
The blue represents the sky, looking back to its' rich history and ahead to the unknown future with perpetual hope. The white represents the snow covered mountains, an indelible backdrop to the city. The green represents Vermont's nickname, "The Green Mountain State", Burlington’s commitment to the environment, and UVM.
Former flag (1990-2017)[]
The former flag is a quartered shield with the city's name on top in front of the westward view from the city over Lake Champlain of the Adirondack Mountains in New York and the Four Brother Islands, including Juniper Island. The flag was adopted in 1990, and designed by a group of students at Edmunds Middle School.
Symbolism[]
The blue dove represents peace and the city's sister cities, the yellow genie lamp represents the colleges and universities in Burlington, the several pine trees represent environmental conservation, and were chosen because it is "the state tree of Vermont", and the sock and buskin represents the arts. The globe in the center of the shield represents the theme "we are one world".
2004 NAVA Survey[]
The flag ranked 107th on the 2004 NAVA city flag survey, with a score of 3.29 out of 10, behind Billings, and ahead of Lansing.
