The flag of Christmas Island is made of a blue and green background split from the upper-left corner to the low-right corner. The southern cross appears on the lower hoist, and in the upper fly, a goldenIn 1986, the Christmas Island Assembly announced a competition to design a new flag and seal for the Territory. On April 14, 1986, the Assembly announced the winner to be Tony Couch of Sydney. However, the flag was not made official until the Territory's administrator, Bill Taylor, declared it on Australia Day, 2002.
