Korean: 대구), formerly spelled Taegu and officially Daegu Metropolitan City (대구광역시; RR: Daegu Gwangyeoksi), is a city in southeastern South Korea. The current flag was first established on October 10, 1996 and revised on December 29, 2001.
Daegu (Description[]
The flag of Daegu Metropolitan City is a green background with the city's official logo in white in the center atop a text that reads "대구광역시" in white, with a thin white line separating the two.
Symbolism[]
The logo symbolizes Palgongsan Mountain and the Nakdong River surrounding Daegu, utilizing triangles and ovals as basic shapes. It expresses a vibrant urban image that embodies future-oriented progressiveness and global openness.
Former Flags[]
First flag (1977 - 1996)[]
The flag of Daegu used from 1977 to October 9, 1996, is a blue background with the former logo of Daegu in white in the center atop a text that reads "대구광역시" in white. The logo was created in 1926 when Daegu Metropolitan City was known as Daegu-bu (Korean: 대구부, Japanese: 大邱府; Romanized: Taikyūfu) in North Gyeongsang (Korean: 경상북도) during the period of Japanese colonial rule. It features the Hanja characters for Daegu (大邱) as its emblem. At the center of the logo, there is a dot that symbolizes the sun.
Second flag (1996 - 2001)[]
On October 10, 1996, the second flag of Daegu Metropolitan City was established. The flag features a blue background with a gold logo of the current logo and lettering. The letters in the logo are spelled "TAEGU," following the McCune-Reischauer romanization system.
On July 7, 2000, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (now known as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) announced a revised romanization of the Korean language. As a result, the romanization of Daegu Metropolitan City changed from "Taegu" to "Daegu." The city’s logo was updated to reflect this change on March 10, 2001.
