The flag of East Timor features two triangles, the outer one yellow and the inner one black, on a red background. Inside the black triangle is a white five-pointed star that is angled slightly to the left. The flag was originally used when East Timor gained independence on November 28th, 1975, but was only used for nine days as nine days later Indonesia invaded and occupied the country until May 19th, 2002, which was when the flag of East Timor was adopted fully.
Meaning[]
The yellow triangle on the flag represents the traces of colonialism. The black triangle represents the "obscurantism that needs to be overcome" according to the constitution of East Timor. Finally, the red background represents the struggle for liberation and the white star represents peace.
