The National Flag of Lao People's Democratic Republic is very unique in the sense that while the country is officially communist, it makes no attempt to show off any reference of its political status anywhere on its flag just like the Cuban Flag, not even a five-pointed star as an emblem which is synonymous with many communist states. From top to bottom, the flag possesses red stripes that is meant to represent blood shed of the Lao people, who willingly gave their lives for the independence of their country from the French colonial hands. The blue stripe that is more prominent in the middle of the flag, stands for the Mekong River, which is a river system that is culturally intertwined with the people of Laos as well as other groups in Southeast Asia. Finally, the pale white disk on the heart of the flag represents the full moon against the Mekong River.
