Like her other sister states, South Australia's flag is composed of a British Blue Ensign defaced by the State Seal.
The design of the State Seal displays a heraldic form of a local bird, the Piping Shrike (more commonly known as the white-backed magpie) standing on the branch of a gum-tree over a yellow disk. The disk is said to be symbolic of the rising sun.
