The flag of Croatia is a horizontal triband of red, white and blue charged with the national coat of arms. It was adopted in 1990, a year before independence from Yugoslavia, although the base tricolour had been in use since 1848.
The colours are derived from the flags of the kingdoms of Croatia (red and white), Slavonia (blue and white) and Dalmatia (blue and gold). The coat of arms displays a red and white checkerboard pattern, a medieval symbol of Croatia, surmounted by a crown consisting of five smaller shields, which correspond to traditional regions of the country: Croatia proper, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia.
