The national flag of the Italian Republic was inspired in terms of design by the French national flag, hence the tricolor appearance and the identical use of the white and red to show support for the French flag's richness in French revolutionary principals. During the flag's first appearance in 1797, the flag looked similar to the French one but the blue corner was replaced with green to symbolized social equality and freedom, but as of the Napoleonic Period, the three colors took a more idealistic interpretation such as the green represents hope, the white represents faith and the red represents love. However, more and more interpretation surfaced such as the green is connected to the colour of the meadows, and the Mediterranean maquis, the white to that of the snows of the Alps and the red to the blood spilt in the Wars of Italian Independence and Unification. A more religious example exists that explains green represents hope, the white represents faith, and the red represents charity.
