French Guiana, a French overseas region and department in South America, has no official flag other than the French tricolour.
The locally used flag is a diagonal bicolour of yellow and green with a red star in the centre. It was originally designed in the 1960s, and adopted by the local trade union UTG in 1967. It was adopted by the departmental council on 22 January 2010, shortly after a local autonomy referendum; the flag was not recognised by the regional council.
The yellow and green flag remained in use by the departmental council until 2015, when the two councils were disbanded and the Territorial Collectivity of Guyane was created. The new collectivity uses a white field with its logo, which depicts a stylised map of the region and a bow with four arrows.
