The flag of French Polynesia, a French overseas collectivity (officially designated an overseas country) in the Pacific region of Polynesia, was adopted in 1984. It is a red-white-red horizontal triband with the territorial emblem in the centre. The emblem depicts a Polynesian canoe with five human figures in it (representing the five island groups), riding on blue waves.
The Tricolore is used as an ensign on ships registered in the territory. Each of French Polynesia's five administrative divisions has its own flag, as do many of the individual islands.
Subdivisions[]
French Polynesia is divided into five groups of islands:
- The Society Islands archipelago, comprising:
The Tuamotu Archipelago
The Gambier Islands
The Marquesas Islands
The Austral Islands
Among its 121 islands and atolls, 75 were inhabited at the 2017 census. Tahiti, which is in the Society Islands group, is the most populous island, being home to nearly 69% of the population of French Polynesia as of 2017. Papeete, located on Tahiti, is the capital of French Polynesia.
