The flag of Gelderland is a horizontal tricolour of blue, yellow (gold) and black. The flag was determined on 15 April 1953 by the Provinciale Staten. Its colours originate from the coat of arms of Gelderland which in turn was based on the coat of arms of the Hertogdom Gelre.

History and colors[]

The three colors are derived from the coat of arms of Gelderland. This coat of arms shows a shield carried by two lions. The left half of the shield shows the golden lion that in a later version of the coat of arms of the Duchy of Guelders was on a blue shield. The right half contains the black lion of Gulik, which has also been part of the Gelre coat of arms since the 14th century, because the dukes of Gulik obtained authority over Gelre. This lion is depicted on a gold background. The three colors blue, gold (yellow) and black are therefore central to the Gelderland coat of arms and are therefore the Gelderland colors. The colors are defined in the following Pantone codes; PMS 286 for the blue, PMS 108, process yellow for the yellow, black is standard. All three courses occupy a third of the height
