Grand Rapids has two flags, an official flag, and a logo flag.
Official Flag[]
The official flag of Grand Rapids consists of a vertical tri color of dark blue, white, dark blue. In the middle of the white bar is the seal of Grand Rapids. The seal consist of a ring of circles. This is followed by "CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICH", curved at the 9 and 3 o' clock marks. on the bottom is the city motto ?"MOTU VIGET" this translates from Latin to English as: Strength in Activity. In the middle of the seal is a Bald Eagle in flight toward the hoist side of the flag. The Eagle bears an American shield while clutching several arrows. Centered over the Eagle are the Scales of Justice, being held by a hand reaching from the clouds. there are nine bundles of three dark blue rays radiating off of the Eagle. Resting on the inner ring of the seal is "1850", the year Grand Rapids was incorporation as a city. The whole seal is recolored to dark blue or white.
Logo Flag[]
The logo flag is a blue field with the logo in the middle. The logo consists are a yellow circle, representing the sun. The sun is separated at the bottom by a wavy line. The wavy line represents the Grand River, which flows through the city. resting on the sun, just above the grand river is a red figure. This red figure is a digitalized version of the La Grande Vitesse, which is one of the city's main tourist attractions.
First Official flag (1896-1915)[]
The first flag of grand rapids was adopted in 1896. The flag is a horizontal tricolor of white, dark blue, white. in the middle of the dark blue bar are the words "FURNITURE CITY" in a gold font with white outlines. This represents Grand Rapids nickname, during this time, Grand Rapids was a major producer of furniture. to the hoist side of the flag are two red half trapezoids on the top and bottom. Each trapezoid contains white and gold factories in each of them.
