The national flag of the Hellenic Republic is shrouded in mystery as its origins are a matter of debate especially as there is no record of the exact reasoning behind its official adoption in early 1822, but numerous theories have materialized to try to explain what the flag's appearance could actually symbolize. White and blue have been interpreted as symbolizing the colors of the sky and sea. The flag has nine equal horizontal stripes of blue alternating with white all whom supposedly represent the nine syllables of the phrase Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος ("Freedom or Death"), the five blue stripes for the syllables Ελευθερία and the four white stripes ή Θάνατος. The nine stripes are also said to represent the letters of the word "freedom" (Greek: ελευθερία) or even the nine Muses, the goddesses of art and civilisation. A blue canton is visible in the upper left corner hosting a white cross, symbolizing Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the dominant religion in the country.
