The former flag of Greensboro was a man on a horse on top of an oak leaf wreath, with 'CITY OF GREENSBORO' and 'NORTH CAROLINA' in yellow, on the top and bottom.
Symbolism[]
The man riding the horse is Major General Nathanael Greene, for whom the city was named. It is said that when he led his troops into the Battle of Guilford Court House (a decisive battle on March 15, 1781, that took place in what is today northwest Greensboro), the flag at the head of his troops was green. The oak leaf wreath symbolizes sturdiness and durability. The date, 1808, is the year of the city’s incorporation.
