The flag of Indianapolis features a dark blue field with a white cross going through it. In the center of the flag and cross is a white circle with a smaller red circle inside of it. Inside of the red circle is a white star. The current flag was designed by Roger E. Gohl, a student of the Herron School of Art, and adopted on May 20th, 1963 after his design won in a 1962 contest.
Meaning[]
The white star in the center represents the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a landmark located in the center of the city. It also stands for Indianapolis' status as the capital of Indiana. The white circle and red field represent the Monument Circle area that surrounds the monument, with the lines coming out of it representing the actual streets that come out from Monument Circle (Meridian Street vertically, Market Street horizontally). The dark blue fields symbolize the residential areas of the city.
2004 NAVA City Flag Survey[]
The flag of Indianapolis ranked 8th in the 2004 NAVA city flag survey behind Portland, Oregon and ahead of Louisville, Kentucky with a score of 8.35/10.
