Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a country in Southern and Western Europe.
The flag of Italy (Italian: bandiera d'Italia), often referred to as The Tricolour (il Tricolore), was adopted as the flag of the Italian Republic in 1946, but it has historical precedents since the Napoleonic era.
Description[]
A vertical tricolour of green, white and red, with the green at the hoist, the white in the center and the red at the fly.
Symbolism[]
The Italian tricolour derives from the flag of France, which was born during the French Revolution, with the blue stripe on the hoist replaced with a green stripe.
Green, in the first Italian tricolor cockades, symbolized natural rights, namely social equality and freedom. During the Napoleonic period, the three colors acquired a more idealistic meaning for the population: the green represents hope, the white represents faith and the red represents love, in reference to the three theological virtues.
