Former flag (1962-2018)

The former flag is the same, just with the gold circle replaced by an "Indian Sun Symbol". It scored a total of 7.92 in the 2004 NAVA city flag survey. It lasted from 1962 to 2018 following a protest after the city's alder flew the flag in front of city council.

Current flag (2018-present)[]

The flag is a sky blue background with a diagonal white stripe that goes from the bottom to the top. In the middle of the flag is a black cross, or a simplified version of the Zia symbol, with a gold circle in it.

The white stripe represents the isthmus between the lakes of Mendota and Monona. The black cross mimics the cross shape of the Wisconsin State Capitol, and it’s location on the isthmus. Its' four points represent the 4 lakes that border the city (Mendota, Monona, Wingra and Waubesa). The gold circle represents the Wisconsin State Capitol's Dome.

1. A combination of both flags.

The diagonal white stripe that goes from the bottom left corner to the top right symbolizes Lake Mendota, Lake Monona and the isthmus between them. The black cross symbolizes the four lakes (Mendota, Monona, Wingra, and Waubesa), as well as the cross shape of the Wisconsin State Capitol.[1] The gold circle in the middle represents the Wisconsin State Capitol's dome and the syn. The dark gold ring and four crosses represent the sun casting shadows on the Wisconsin State Capitol's dome and said lakes.
