The Flag of Magellan Region Is Official Since February 5, 1997.
The flag of the Magellan Region and the Chilean Antarctic is, up to now, one of the five regional flags adopted by some region of Chile whose rank is official; the others are those of Atacama, Coquimbo, Los Ríos and Los Lagos.
Along with other regional symbols, the flag was officially adopted by the Regional Council through Resolution No. 42, promulgated on October 15, 1996 and published on February 5, 1997.
Design[]
The regional flag consists of a blue cloth, at the bottom of which rises a golden stripe highlighting six peaks, which are covered in their upper part by a white border. Above these, and on the blue background, the Southern Cross is placed in white and inclined.
According to the official meaning, the blue color represents the night sky, while the golden peaks symbolize the steppe of the region and the white indicates the snow that frequently falls in winter. The Southern Cross symbolizes the southern position of the region.
