The flag of Malaysia, also known as Malay: Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory), was created by a man named Mohamed Hamzah in 1947 and is composed of a field of 14 alternating red and white stripes along the fly and a blue canton bearing a crescent and a 14-point star known as the Bintang Persekutuan (Federal Star). The 14 stripes, of equal width, represent the equal status in the federation of the 13 member states and the federal territories, while the 14 points of the star represent the unity between these entities. The crescent represents Islam, the country's state religion; the blue canton symbolises the unity of the Malaysian people; the yellow of the star and crescent is the royal colour of the Malay rulers. The origins of the flag was chosen by Malay rulers at the time after winning a design competition involving the new flag of the state.

Historical flags

In 1946, Malaya was partially given rights from the British as the Malayan Union, April 1st of that year. 2 years of the new state followed with disapproval of the people and later adopted as the Federation of Malaya in 1948.

When Malaya gained its independence on August 31st 1957, the flag was originally 11 stripes with an 11-pointed star representing the 11 original states in the federation
