The Flag of the State of Maryland consists of the heraldic banner of George Calvert, first Baron Baltimore and Lord Baltimore (1579-1632). It is arguably the only state flag in the United States to be based on English heraldry. This uniquely designed and distinctively colored state flag was officially adopted by Maryland and its General Assembly in 1904.

Maryland State Flag Symplistic Proposal. The existing flag depicts the coats of arms of the state’s two founding families and is very well-liked. I kept that idea but simplified it and united the symbols. By Ed Mitchell. 2013.
