Mayotte is a French overseas region and department located in the Mozambique Channel near the Comoros, which has a claim on the island. It has no official flag other than the French tricolour.
An unofficial flag of the island consists of a white field with its coat of arms, surmounted by the name "Mayotte" in red. The coat of arms, adopted in 1982, is supported by two seahorses; on the bottom is the motto "Ra hachiri" ( "We are vigilant" in Shimaore). The shield uses the French national colours, and contains an Islamic crescent, two ylang-ylang flowers, and an engrailed border representing the coral reefs surrounding Mayotte.
