The Mi'kmaq (also Mi'gmaq, Lnu, Miꞌkmaw or Miꞌgmaw) are a First Nations people of the Northeastern Woodlands, indigenous to the areas of Canada's Atlantic Provinces, primarily Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland, and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec as well as Native Americans in the northeastern region of Maine.

Symbolism[]

The Mi'kmaq flag, commonly refered to as the Santéé Mawióómi flag or the Mi'kmaq Grand Council Flag, design meaning:

  • Wapéék (white) denotes the purity of Creation.
  • Mekwéék klujjewey (red cross) represents mankind and infinity (four directions).
  • Náákúúset (sun) represents forces of the day.
  • Tepkunaset (moon) signifies forces of the night.
