Flag of Michigan

This is a gallery of flag redesigns of the U.S. state of Michigan.

Descriptions[]

  1. The white is the peninsula and the rising sun. The shield represents defense, which comes up three times in the current flag. The three stars symbolize Michigan’s three mottos: “Out of Many, One”; “I Will Defend”; and “If You Seek a Pleasant Peninsula, Look Around You.”
  2. Inspired by Full_Metal_Machinist proposal, except rotated and maize-and-blue instead of blue-and-white. Also, the blue and green together make a stylized 'M'.
  3. Keep the white stars on a green field to represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas (on the hoist), and centre an image of a buck's head on a square blue background (on the fly). Ideally, it should be a stylized version in maize (yellow) but that's far beyond my MS Paint abilities. I 'borrowed' the elk's head from the current Michigan flag.
  4. Combining Full_Metal_Machinist proposal (with maize-and-blue) and 5th Eye's 'Michigan stars' in the hoist.
  5. Design and colors based on the Michigan seal (without happy-guy-and-rifle), with 5th Eye's 'Michigan stars'.
  6. Alternative design and colors based on the Michigan seal (without happy-guy-and-rifle).
  7. I liked the proposals by Usacelt where he uses the triangles, which have 3 sides just like a peninsula is surrounded by water on 3 sides, but I thought there should be 4 stars for the Great Lakes rather than 2 stars for the two peninsulas (which are already represented by the green triangles)
  8. similar to the other one except 5 stars, for all 5 Great Lakes (even though one doesn't border MI) and one of the stars is a 6 point star for a total of 26 points, since Michigan was the 26th state to join the union
  9. based on the seal, green peninsula sticking out into the blue water and yellow sky
  10. This replaces the stars from Krago1 with a symbolic representation of the Mackinac Bridge, which links the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
  11. A stylised map of the state (red) and lakes (blue)
  12. Based on the Full_Metal_Machinist flag - this sees a minor mod to place the stars on the center lines of the white stripes.
  13. Blue bed sheet with two green stars to represent upper and lower Michigan. Edged white, two horizontal white stripes into the fly to represent the bonnet stripes of a Detroit built fast car.
  14. Stars hold point touch layout.
  15. The 5 stars represents the Great Lakes (blue) represents the water, freedom and justice (white) represents the Mackinac Bridge, purity and snow (green) represents the land and growth (orange) represents the industry and Unity.
  16. The two stars and the two green stripes represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, the four blue stripes represent the four Great Lakes that border Michigan, and the white stripe represents the Mackinac Bridge that joins the two peninsulas.
  17. The four triangular sections represent the four Great Lakes that border Michigan.
  18. The four arms of the diagonal blue cross represent the four Great Lakes that border Michigan, and the two green upper and lower triangular sections represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

  20. The two stars represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

  22. The triangular sections represent the four Great Lakes that Michigan borders, and the two stars represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
  23. The two stars represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
  24. The two stars and the two green stripes represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, the four blue stripes represent the four Great Lakes that border Michigan, and the red stripe represents the Mackinac Bridge that joins the two peninsulas.
  25. The four arms of the diagonal cross represent the four Great Lakes that Michigan borders, and the two stars represent the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
  26. Michigan's state motto is "I will defend." For the state's flag what could be more fitting than a version of the "Continental Flag" used by the Patriots during the early American Revolution?
  27. The two green bars represent how Michigan is divided into two peninsulas. Blue represents the Straits of Mackinac. The white fimbriations ostensibily represent snow since it snows a lot of Michigan, but really I just added it since it makes the different colors easier to see, so they don't blend into each other like a mish-mash.
  28. The overall design of the flag invokes what someone would see standing on the shores of the Great Lakes watching the sun set (or rise).
  29. The overall design is derived from elements found on the Michigan state coat of arms. Green represents a peninsula, orange represents the sunset (or dawn), blue represents the Great Lakes. The white represents snow, since it snows a lot in Michigan. The two bars meeting in the middle and continuing on represents the two peninsulas coming together to form one state.
  30. This design pays homage to Michigan's history as a territory of "New France" and to the French explorers who provided so many of Michigan's place names. In addition, each arm of the cross signifies one of the four Great Lakes which border the state.
  31. This is the Glenfiddich stag.
  32. The four blue quadrants again represent the four Great Lakes, and are borrowed from an design by Brandon Hundt (submitted as part of a design contest for a new flag for the city of Rochester, MN.) The cogwheel represents the automobile industry.
  33. The blue and white represent the water and the land, respectively. The 26 stars reference Michigan's status as the twenty-sixth state admitted to the Union. The large central star represents the bifurcated state.
  34. Uses the Blue, Green and Brown Pallet. The Deer is our state animal and the Stars are the peninsulas.
  35. Blue cross on white inversely represents the flags used by colonial French explorers in the state. Four dark blue legs of the cross represent the four Great Lakes surrounding the state. The green sections represent the upper and lower peninsulas of the state; with the star in the upper section representing Mackinac and the Lakes Huron-Michigan connection, with the star in the lower section representing Detroit and the Lakes Huron-Erie connection. The light blue sections represent the state’s major coasts on the southeast and northwest of the lower peninsula.
  36. The blue represents the great lakes that surround Michigan and perserverance. The Green in the center represents Michigan itself and growth and hope for a better future. The deer pays tribute to the current Michigan flag and it is the state game animal of Michigan. The brown of the deer stands for all the wildlife found in Michigan and the two stars recognize the Lower and upper penisula. The coppor coloring stands for all the natrual resources found in Michigan and for recognizes Michigans industrial background.
  37. The canton of the flag of the United States when Michigan was admitted to the Union in 1837. It contains 26 stars as Michigan is the 26th state to be admitted to the Union.
  38. Inspired by the official shield of Michigan and the 13 stripes of the U.S. Flag.
  39. Overlays an image of the iconic Mackinac Bridge over the colors on the shield of the Michigan state seal.
  40. Bridge is Mackinac Green.
  41. The two offset stars, as well as the 2 green bars, represent the two peninsulas, the 4 blue bars represent the lakes bordering Michigan. The black bar is "suspended" in white, representing the Mackinac bridge.
