Michigan - Continental Flag - I Will Defend .jpeg|Michigan state flag proposed by Ken Morton. Michigan's state motto is "I will defend." For the state's flag what could be more fitting than a version of the "Continental Flag" used by the Patriots during the early American Revolution?

The white fimbriations ostensibily represent snow since it snows a lot of Michigan, but really I just added it since it makes the different colors easier to see, so they don't blend into each other like a mish-mash."''

Alternate Michigan Flag by Laqueesha.png|MI Flag Proposal "Laqueesha". Author's note: ''"The overall design is derived from elements found on the Michigan state coat of arms. Green represents a peninsula, orange represents the sunset (or dawn), blue represents the Great Lakes. The white represents snow, since it snows a lot in Michigan. The two bars meeting in the middle and continuing on represents the two peninsulas coming together to form one state."''

Revision as of 23:27, January 6, 2020

The flag of the State of Michigan depicts the state's coat-of-arms on a dark blue field, as set forth by Michigan state law. The Governor has a variant of the flag with a white instead of a blue field.

The state coat of arms depicts a light blue shield, upon which the sun rises over a lake and peninsula, and a man with raised hand representing peace and holding a long gun representing our fight for state and nation as a frontier state.

As supporters, the elk and moose are derived from the Hudson's Bay Company coat of arms, and depict great animals of Michigan. The bald eagle represents the United States which formed the State of Michigan from the Northwest Territory.

The design features three Latin mottos: "E Pluribus Unum" ("Out of many, one", a motto of the United States), "Tuebor" ("I will defend"), and "Si Quæris Peninsulam Amœnam Circumspice" ("If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you", the official state motto).
