New Caledonia, a French sui generis collectivity in Melanesia, has two flags. Originally, only the French tricolour had official status. In 2010, the flag of the independentist Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), named the Kanak flag, started to be flown alongside the French flag following a vote by the local congress. The decision proved controversial due to the political nature of the Kanak flag, and was condemned by then-President of the Government of New Caledonia Philippe Gomès.

The Kanak flag is a triband of blue, red and green. It is charged with a flèche faîtière, a Kanak carved totem or spire traditionally placed on rooftops, on a yellow disc.
