== Symbolism ==
"[T]he flag of North Carolina shall consist of a blue union, containing in the center thereof a white star with the letter "N" in gilt on the left and the letter "C" in gilt on the right of said star, the circle containing the same to be one-third the width of the union. The fly of the flag shall consist of two equally proportioned bars; the upper bar to be red, the lower bar to be white; that the length of the bars horizontally shall be equal to the perpendicular length of the union, and the total length of the flag shall be one-third more than its width. That above the star in the center of the union there shall be a gilt scroll in semi-circular form, containing in black letters this inscription "May 20th, 1775," and that below the star there shall be a similar scroll containing in black letters the inscription: "April 12th, 1776"."

It bears the dates of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (May 20, 1775) and of the Halifax Resolves (April 12, 1776), documents that place North Carolina at the forefront of the American independence movement. Both dates also appear on the Seal of North Carolina.

NC PNG.png|The shape of the angles in the flag mimic the shape of the state itself, with blue for the ocean in the southeast, and green for the mountains and forests in the northwest. This idea is also represented in the state seal. The white bar in the middle of the flag represents the Piedmont Crescent, the historical economic and population center of the state connecting Charlotte and Raleigh. The Crescent was developed as a result of the cotton mill industry, hence the white color. The red star comes from a Civil War version of the NC flag that had a red field with white star. The colors are inverted today to reflect the new direction of the state in the modern era. The star also represents the cap of liberty and horn of plenty from the state seal. File:NC Flag Proposal DILWeed649 1.svg|Redesign 1 by [[User:DILWeed649|DILWeed649]], December 2023. This redesign is derived from the current flag by removing the blue bar at the hoist, inverting the colors where it used to be, and centering a blue star from the Guilford courthouse flag on the intersection. Circling the star are eight escutcheons taken from the state senate's coat of arms, representing the eight lords proprietor of the colonial province of Carolina. They point inward toward the Guilford star, a symbol of North Carolina's statehood and role in the revolutionary war. The star and escutcheons combined look like the afterimages of a spinning propeller, a nod to the Wright Flyer's first flight at Kitty Hawk.

The flag of North Carolina is a bicolor of red and white, with a blue stripe at the hoist. Inside the blue stripe, is a white star separating N and C, with 2 scroll shapes on the top and bottom reading "MAY 20th 1775" and "APRIL 12th 1776".

Symbolism[]

It bears the dates of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (May 20, 1775) and of the Halifax Resolves (April 12, 1776), documents that place North Carolina at the forefront of the American independence movement. Both dates also appear on the Seal of North Carolina.
