The flag of North Holland (Dutch: vlag van Noord-Holland) is the official flag of North Holland. The flag was adopted on 22 October 1958 after it was approved by the Hoge Raad van Adel. The colours originate from the coat of arms of North Holland.

History[]

The flag was adopted in 1958 as stated; this happened after the design was approved by the Supreme Council of Nobility. This decision - including a color image of the flag - was published in the Provincial Journal of North Holland, 1958, no. 67. However, the yellow-red-blue tricolor had already been unofficially in use for several years.

Until the mid-20th century, the Dutch provinces only carried the Dutch flag. Twenty years before the adoption of the flag, Queen Wilhelmina celebrated her 40th anniversary of the reign. In addition, all provinces were represented by flags based on the colors of the provincial arms. The North Holland flag used on that occasion was a horizontal red-yellow-blue tricolor. The reason this color sequence is not continued in the current flag is that red-yellow-blue too closely resembles the red-white-blue of the Dutch flag.
