The flag of the state of Oklahoma consists of a traditional Osage Nation buffalo-skin shield with seven eagle feathers on a sky blue field.

The Osage shield is covered by two symbols of peace: the calumet representing Native Americans, and the olive branch representing European Americans. Six golden brown crosses, Native American symbols for stars, are spaced on the shield. The blue field is inspired by the Choctaw flag adopted by the tribe in 1860 and carried though the American Civil War. The blue field also represents devotion. The shield surmounted by the calumet and olive branch represents defensive or protective warfare, showing a love of peace by a united people.

The governor's flag of Oklahoma consists of the state seal surrounded by five white stars on a green background. The flag has a golden fringe around its edges.

Historical Flag of Oklahoma

Oklahoma's first flag was adopted in 1911, four years after statehood. Taking the colors red, white, and blue from the flag of the United States, the flag featured a large centered white star fimbriated in blue on a red field. The number 46 was written in blue inside the star, as Oklahoma was the forty-sixth state to join the Union.

Updated Oklahoma state flag proposal. Oklahoma is based on the Choctaw words, “Olka Humma,” which translate to “red people.” The current flag has preserved the relationship between the Anglos and the Natives with an Osage shield crossed by a peace pipe and an olive branch. I wanted to preserve the idea of this relationship. This design is based on a Parfleche war shield. The points on the symbol represent some of the dominant tribes that I’ve in Oklahoma — Cheyenne, Kiowa-Comanche-Apache, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muskogee (Creek), Cherokee, Osage, and Seminole. My version a design by Hans. The white and green are the colors of the state and represent the white man pioneers who founded the state. The red and white represent the Native American bloodshed leading up to the state's founding. The cross represented here, both a symbol of Christian and Native American spirituality, is joined to represent the unification of two cultures within one state. Posted by Preston Knapp [1]

the color of “Waving Wheat” ready for harvesting, the right triangle shall be a medium green representing the eastern part of the state known as “Green Country” and the center triangle shall be the color of Oklahoma’s “Red Earth”. The year “1907” shall be in black text and geometrically centered in the upper left quadrant of the flag. A red, five-pointed star, with the number “46” geometrically centered in the star in black text, representing Oklahoma’s admission number to the United States, shall be placed in the geometric center of the upper right quadrant of the flag. The word “OKLAHOMA”, in all capital letters and white text, shall be horizontally centered near the bottom of and entirely in the red earth triangle. A solid black rectangle, representing the state’s highest elevation at Black Mesa, shall be located at the bottom left corner of the blue field. A solid blue rectangle, representing Oklahoma’s beautiful lakes, matching the color of the upper blue field of the flag, shall be located at the upper right corner of the green triangle. A detailed, computer rendered image of Oklahoma’s state bird, the scissortail fly-catcher in flight, flying up to the right and away from the viewer, shall be positioned at the center of the flag, overlapping over all four of the colored fields.

The faded colors represent the lost history and culture brought about by white settlement and colonization culminating into the state's formation. The shield now represents the resistance of the natives to the destruction of their societies that led to the formation of the modern state, to act as a reminder that they all did not just actively accept their removal; but rather resisted and scarified all they could in defense of their own cultures until the end. The peace pipe and olive branch now represent the peaceful nature of the Indians, and their presence on top of the shield shows that Indians today favor peaceful resistance opposed to armed. The American colors and similar layout show that these Indians in question are Americans and have fought hard to be treated as equal to their fellow non-natives and are all proud of their nationality.
