The national flag of the Sultanate of Oman started out as a plain red banner meant to honor the indigenous people of the region back in 1970. But as time went on, the banner was granted the green and white borders along with the nation's official national emblem, the badge of the Albusaidi Dynasty, on the fly. The emblem is presented as crossed swords over a fastened khanjar, which is a 18th century ceremonial Omani sword that is designed to look similar to a hook of sorts and is a relic that is closely associated with the sultanate. An ornate horsebit links the weapons together. The white portion symbolizes peace and the color is often connected to a native religious leader named Imam. The green portion honors the Jabal al-Akdar, or "Green Mountains," which rest in northern Oman. Finally, the presence of the red color that covers more space on the banner is thought to be merely a custom that many Gulf states have in decorating their flags.
