The unofficial flag of Pays de la Loire combines heraldic symbols of the traditional provinces and regions in its territory. The hoist half is identical to the coat of arms of the province of Maine (a blue field semy of gold fleurs-de-lis within a red border, and a white lion in the canton), and represents Maine and Anjou. In the fly half, the ermine pattern symbolizes the traditionally Breton parts of the region, which include the capital Nantes; it is surrounded by a wavy blue border. In the centre is the symbol of the Vendée: a crown above two interlaced hearts.
