The Flag of Pittsburgh was adopted in March 15, 1899, making it the 4th oldest city flag in use. It was voted 24th place in the 2004 NAVA City flag survey. It was also the best triband flag in survey.
Current Flag[]
The Flag is a 8:10 Triband bi-color. It has two black bars on the left and right with a yellow bar in the middle. These are the official city colors of Pittsburgh, which has been used on every professional sports team in Pittsburgh. In the middle of the yellow stripe is the coat of arms of Pittsburgh. It is based on the coat of arms of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. It contains a checkered line of white and blue with two yellow discs on top, and one yellow disks on the bottom. Inside of those discs are golden Pheasants, a type of bird that can be found all over the world. These were originally meant to be bezants, but the designer of the coat of arms mixed up bezants with Pheasants. AL of this is laid onto a unique and fancy shield. on top of the shield is a castile in black with white outlines, many say it's meant to represent Fort Pitt. It's not too sure if that's what it's suppose to, mean since the design of the fort may have been different from the one used in the coat of arms.
Civil Flag[]
The Civil flag is similar of the City flag. However the proportions are shorter with a 4:5 ratio proportion. The shield is also gone, being replaced with the castle. around the castle are 13 dark blue stars. These most likely represent the 13 original colonies, Pennsylvania being one of them.
