The flag of Portales was adopted in 2009 after flag design contest.
Current Flag (2009-present)[]
The flag consists of a divided horizontal bi-bar field. The top half of the flag consists of a dark teal color. There is a yellow sun with red sunrays rising over the land below. The lower half of the flag consists of a horizon-straddling sun beaming its rays over land made up of alternating strips of brown and green. The green represents the color of the Eastern New Mexico University. The blue represents the sky above Portales. The red represents sacrifice in the sun itself. The Yellow represents Friendliness of the city. The brown represents the ground that Portales sits on.
