The flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico consists of five alternating red and white horizontal stripes. At the hoist is a blue equilateral triangle with a white five-pointed star in its center. It is based on the similar Cuban Flag.

History[]

The flag was first used in the 1890s, but was banned after the island came under U.S. control in 1898. It was readopted when Puerto Rico became a commonwealth in 1952.
