Réunion is a French overseas region and department in the Indian Ocean. It has no official flag other than the French tricolour.

The most well-known local flag was designed in 1975 by Guy Pignolet from Sainte-Rose, and has since been nicknamed "Lo Mahavéli". It won a contest organised by the Vexillological Association of Réunion (ARV) in 2003, and started being flown by several city councils in 2014. The flag shows the volcano Piton de la Fournaise in red, with five golden rays meeting at its summit.

Other local flags[]

The Association for the Réunion Flag (APDR) proposed a flag in 1996. It has four coloured sections representing the island's ethnic groups (orange for Indians, blue for Europeans, green for Africans and red for Chinese) around a white circle for peace. It also includes the French Tricolore along the hoist.

A cultural flag of Réunion, designed by François Saint-Omer of the Mouvman Lantant Koudmin (MLK) in 1984, depicts the volcano and the sun on a blue-green-black triband.

An independentist flag was designed in 1986 by two members of the political parties LPLP and Nasion Reyoné. It is a horizontal tricolour of red, yellow and green with a five-pointed star in the canton.
