Region Zealand is Denmark’s southernmost administrative region, created on January 1, 2007, as part of the Danish Municipal Reform. This reform replaced the traditional counties ("amter") with five larger regions. Region Zealand consists of 17 municipalities. The Danish government plans to merge Region Zealand with the Capital Region on January 1, 2027. The 47-member regional council for the newly formed Eastern Denmark will be elected during the 2025 Danish local elections.
