The flag of Saba has the colors red, white, blue and gold (yellow). The top half consists of two equal red triangles; the bottom half of two equal blue triangles. The diamond in the center is white and contains a five-pointed gold star. This color was chosen to symbolize the island's wealth and hope for a good future. The star represents the island; the colors red, white and blue symbolize the bond with the Netherlands. Red also symbolizes courage, unity and vigor; white represents peace and blue represents the sea.

History[]

In 1983 the island territories of Saba, Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius were created. Before that, the three islands were united in one island area Windward Islands. The new island territory of Saba decided on October 15, 1984 to set up a committee to design a flag, a coat of arms and a national anthem. 130 designs were received for the flag, three of which were selected by the committee. On December 6, 1985 (Saba Day), the design of the then 18-year-old Edmond Johnson was chosen and hoisted for the first time.
