The flag represents the Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province. In the flag of the Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas Province, the original colors of the cantonal flag are kept: red and green, (gules and sinople heraldic).
The flag is divided by a black and white blade (heraldic silver and saber), which contains the colors of the original “manpe tsanpá”, whose sum is fourteen, corresponding to the parishes and the canton, which make up the province.
The blade of silver and saber also configures the four road axes (Pichincha, Guayas, Manabí and Esmeraldas) that cross Santo Domingo. The Sun represents "I" in tsáfiqui, with rays cut in yellow and white (heraldic gold and silver), which means human, organizational and material wealth. The Sun, in the central part that is located in the middle of the cross and collects in its four main linear rays the cardinal points and the forty years of attempted provincialization.
The other four linear rays: northeast, southeast, northwest and southwest, symbolize the four most important hydrographic basins in the region: northeast: the middle and lower course of the Toachi river; northwest: the Quinindé river basin; southeast: the Bourbon river basin; southwest: the Peripa river basin.
The four rays located in the north-northeast, east-east, south-west, and west-west refer to the four provincialization committees, which promoted the provincialization of Santo Domingo.
The last four flamboyant rays in the north-northwest, south-east, east-northeast and west-southwest represent the four seasons of greatest agricultural wealth in the province. From the center of the Sun, a hummingbird emerges, a symbol of ancient Tsáchila wisdom, polychrome, in an ascending posture towards the upper left corner of the flag, and occupies the entire space of the star.
Bird that by its colors alludes to multiculturalism, the multi-ethnicity that characterizes Santo Domingo; its open wings evoke brotherly love, with which this land welcomed people from other places and those who were born here. The seventeen pens that it has, correspond to the seventeen months that it took to make the consultation and achieve provincialization.
