Seoul (Korean: 서울), officially Seoul Special Metropolitan City (Korean: 서울특별시; RR: Seoul Teukbyeolsi) is the capital and largest city of South Korea. The current flag was established on October 28, 1996.
Description[]
The flag of Seoul Special Metropolitan City is a white background with the city's official logo in the center.
Symbolism[]
The logo features the Korean Hangul characters for Seoul (서울), along with representations of the city's mountains, sea, and the Han River. Overall, it symbolizes Seoul's aspiration to become a human-centered city by illustrating a dynamic, energetic person. In the context of nature, humanity, and urban life, the green mountains represent a love for the environment, the blue Han River symbolizes history and vitality, and the sun at the center embodies a vision and hope for the future. These three elements are connected through fluid brushstrokes, creating a friendly depiction of Seoul and the vibrancy of its people.
Former Flag[]
The former flag is used from April 1, 1947 to October 27, 1996. The former flag consists of a blue background with the former logo of Seoul in yellow in the center. The logo was selected from among approximately 1,000 entries submitted through a contest held by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on October 18, 1946 to commemorate the separation of Gyeongseong-bu (Korean: 경성부, Japanese: 京城府; Romanized: Keijōfu) from Gyeonggi Province (Korean: 경기도) and the establishment of a new city. The circle represents the Seoul City Wall, the Han River, and the streets of Seoul, and the octagonal star represents the eight mountains that surrounded Seoul at the time of its enactment in 1947: Namsan, Ansan, Inwangsan, Bukaksan, Naksan, Muhakbong, Wausan, and Eungbongsan.
